ESPN’s Mike Greenberg’s fandom of the New York Jets has been well-documented throughout his lengthy tenure at the network. And moving forward, his name may be forever etched in the history of the Jets organization without any of his doing.
On Monday, the Jets requested to interview Mike Greenberg for their vacant general manager position. Not the longtime ESPN employee, but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers assistant GM who shares the name Mike Greenberg.
The request was accepted and conducted on Friday, which the Jets detailed in a post on X.

Naturally, ESPN’s Mike Greenberg took notice of the news, replying with a joyful response showing just how much he enjoyed the idea of someone named Mike Greenberg potentially becoming the new general manager of his favorite team.
“This is my new favorite post in the history of social media,” wrote Greenberg.

If anybody deserves to have a general manager don their name, it is someone like Mike Greenberg, who, despite being consistently beaten down by his favorite team, expresses optimism around the Jets every year.
Keep in mind, this is the same man who once bet $1,000 on a Jets Super Bowl win shortly after his father passed away. When the team subsequently went 4-12, Greenberg admitted that he “abandoned religion.”
While the prospect of watching Mike Greenberg oversee the Jets is quite enticing to ESPN’s Mike Greenberg, it also comes with some obvious downsides.
Say the Jets continue to disappoint on the field for years to come, Greeny would have to blame… Mike Greenberg… for the team’s failures, which would be a bit awkward to do publically.
Regardless, it sure seems like things can’t get much worse for the Jets than they were this year given the expectations coming into the year, which Greenberg even went as far as calling “One of the truly colossal failures in recent sports memory”.
So chances are, anyone who can make a difference will likely be a welcome sight for Greeny. Even if they don’t happen to share his name.
