‘Get Up’ celebrates Mike Greenberg’s 30th anniversary at ESPN

The face of ESPN has changed plenty of times over the years. Chris Berman and Stuart Scott were once seen as most synonymous with the network, but in recent years that title has mostly belonged to Pat McAfee and Stephen A. Smith.

But there’s one man that has been through all of the ups and downs and shake-ups that ESPN has been through over the past three decades — Mike Greenberg.

On Wednesday, ESPN’s Get Up celebrated Greenberg’s 30th anniversary with the network with a sweet moment and tribute video, featuring a light roast from Adam Schefter for his Jets fandom, a hit from the golf course courtesy of Rex Ryan, and Randy Moss with the catch of the day.

Greenberg was clearly emotional when the broadcast cut back to him in the studio.

“My God. That is very nice. I don’t know what to say,” Greenberg said. “Thank you very much. Schefty and Rex and Randy Moss. Randy Moss wishing me a happy 30th! Mom, I really made it! Randy Moss knows my name. That seems about as good as it gets.”

While he is far from the boisterous voices of McAfee and Stephen A. that have become the loudest, most advertised brands at ESPN, Greenberg is the steady-handed utility man capable of carrying any show he’s asked to host.

Mike & Mike made stars out of both Greenberg and co-host Mike Golic. Since then, Greenberg has become a staple across ESPN, with Get Up as his main home, but he also appears across the sporting world as needed.

Holding one job for 30 years is impressive in any field, but Greenberg’s role at ESPN is such that it’s difficult to imagine the network without him. The world of sports media has shifted plenty over the past three decades, but a host like Greenberg is always a good thing to have.
