During a conference call to discuss the upcoming Stanley Cup Finals on ESPN, the Worldwide Leader announced Thursday that Mark Messier has signed a new, multi-year contract extension.

According to ESPN PR’s release, the six-time Stanley Cup champion and Hockey Hall of Famer will continue to work for the network as an NHL studio and in-game analyst.

“Mark Messier brings such depth and insight to our hockey coverage and truly embodies what it means to be the ultimate team player,” Mark Gross, ESPN’s senior vice president of production & remote events, said in a statement. “As a first-ballot Hockey Hall of Famer with six Stanley Cups, he’s been a tremendous addition to our studio coverage, and we’re thrilled to reach a contract extension with a true NHL legend.”

While details of Messier’s extension with ESPN were not readily made available, it’s clear that the network envisions him as part of their NHL coverage for the foreseeable future. Messier originally joined ESPN’s NHL coverage in Jan. 2021 and has since immersed himself as one of the stalwarts in its studio coverage alongside Steve Levy and PK Subban.

Well-known for his NHL career with the Edmonton Oilers (1979-91), New York Rangers (1991-97, 2000-04) and Vancouver Canucks (1997-00), Messier has led his playing experience — especially that with the Rangers — shine through in his analysis. He will likely continue to do so for the series that includes one of his former teams (the Oilers) and the Florida Panthers.
