It’s been a year since Lee Corso retired from College GameDay. The 91-year-old has since been largely out of the public eye, even choosing to watch the Indiana Hoosiers win the national championship from his home in Florida rather than attending the game or making a return to College GameDay. This week, though, Kirk Herbstreit gave a bit of a health update on his longtime co-host.

During an interview with Us Weekly that was published this week, Herbstreit revealed that he was able to connect with Corso in Orlando just before the start of the college football season.

“I was doing an appearance down in Orlando maybe two or three weeks ago, and he used to do this appearance for 25 years,” Herbstreit told the outlet. “It’s down right in his neck of the woods. He found out I was going to be down there and he asked if we could connect.”

Instead of meeting him at the event, however, Herbstreit said that Corso insisted on driving through a thunderstorm and meeting him right at the airport, where they had an emotional reunion.

“By the time I landed, there he is,” Herbstreit said. “We hugged, embraced. He was emotional because we haven’t seen each other in a while. When he cried, it made me cry. Because he’s my guy. We were able to hang out for probably 20 or 30 minutes and just kind of get caught up.”

Herbstreit went on to give a bit of an update on Corso’s health, saying the 91-year-old has “a lot of physical ailments that he’s been dealing with, but his mind is incredible.”

“We’d all be lucky to have such cognitive thinking at 91,” Herbstreit told Us Weekly. “His eyes are sharp. He’s dialed in. He’s just going through some stuff that makes it tough on him.”

Herbstreit said that despite his age and health issues, Lee Corso is still quite tuned in to the college football landscape.

“But he knows about teams. He knows about players. He’s got opinions. I just sat there and listened and loved hearing him talk about that. He’s great. I told him that everybody loves him, everybody misses him. He feels that love, so it’s always good to see him,” Herbstreit said.
