ESPN FC host Dan Thomas needs liver transplant, plans to ‘keep working right up until I get the call’

Some ESPN FC viewers have noticed in recent months that studio host Dan Thomas’s eyes would often appear yellow or discolored, leading to speculation that he might be dealing with a health issue.

On Friday, the host of ESPN+’s daily soccer show explained that he has been diagnosed with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) and requires a liver transplant.

“Thanks to everyone who’s been in touch over the last few weeks about my health — especially those asking about my yellow eyes,” Thomas wrote.

To give you some context: back in 2010, I was diagnosed with a chronic disease called PSC (Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis), which gradually destroys the bile ducts. Fast forward 15 years, and it’s now been decided that I need a liver transplant.

“I’m sharing this with you today because — as of this morning — I’m officially on the transplant list. My plan is to keep working right up until I get the call. And in case that happens while I’m on the air… we’ve had a vote and decided Stevie’s [Steve Nicol] in charge.”

According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a chronic liver disease in which the bile ducts inside and outside the liver become inflamed and scarred, and eventually narrowed or blocked. When this happens, bile builds up in the liver and causes further liver damage. Doctors can’t cure primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) or keep the disease from getting worse. They can treat narrowed or blocked bile ducts and the symptoms and complications of PSC. Doctors may consider a liver transplant if PSC leads to liver failure.
