ESPN cutting costs is nothing new. Longtime ESPN Radio personality Kevin Winter is the latest to depart the network in an effort to help the Bristol bottom line.
On Sunday, Winter posted to his social media pages that his contract is not being renewed by ESPN. He says it was due to “cost-cutting” at the network.
Winter was a part of ESPN Radio for over 20 years. He first joined the network in 2004 and worked as a SportsCenter anchor and studio host for pretty much every sport that has been broadcasted by ESPN Radio over the last two decades. He also did play-by-play for college football for the company.
In the social media post, spotted by Barrett Sports Media, Winter shares how heartbreaking it was to learn that he would be leaving the company after so many years of service. He writes in part, “I have been informed due to ‘cost-cutting’ my contract was not being renewed. I’ll let you all discuss the idea of a multibillion-dollar corporation needed to cut my small 6 figure salary in order to keep the lights on.”

ESPN Radio has undergone a litany of changes over the last couple of years with on-air personnel being moved in and out and shuffled around quite frequently. Last month, Mike Greenberg announced that he would be leaving his eponymous show to be replaced by Clinton Yates. Even though Kevin Winter wasn’t one of the main hosts on the network, he has been a fixture on the airwaves for many years and his presence will be missed.
The podcast era has seen huge challenges for radio across the country and ESPN Radio is no different. Combine those challenges with ESPN’s overall budget cuts and it leads to unfortunate news like this.
