After announcing that his return to announcing would be postponed, Dick Vitale went into more detail about what happened.
In addition to being a legendary college basketball analyst, Vitale is frequently active on social media, commenting on other big sporting events. But during Saturday’s NFL Playoff game between the Houston Texans and Kansas City Chiefs, Vitale’s X (formerly Twitter) page was silent. Shortly after Kansas City’s win, Vitale — who had earlier clarified that the latest issue was not cancer-related — explained his lack of social media commentary on the game.
“I’m sorry that unable to post about sports but I’m recovering from a tough fall & being kept active at the hospital,” Vitale shared. “Good news is the neurosurgeons have said I am making great strides & surgery not necessary. So sorry that I can’t get at courtside as was planned.”

When Vitale feels up for returning to announcing, he’ll certainly be welcomed back with open arms. Similarly, if he’s in a position to use social media to comment on the NFL playoff games — and certainly Monday’s College Football Playoff National Championship Game between Ohio State and his beloved Notre Dame — that would be welcome, as well.
That said, while Vitale is certainly missed, no apologies were needed there. His health is the top priority.
