ESPN’s College GameDay will be heading to Knoxville this coming weekend to countdown to kickoff of Saturday’s game between No. 14 Tennessee and Texas.
While it’s hardly a surprise that ESPN is bringing its road show to another marquee SEC matchup, it’s worth noting that this is the first week we’ve seen this season where there was really any debate as to which school would host GameDay.
Time to find out who the real UT is 😏

ESPN announced at the start of the summer that it would open the season at LSU-Clemson to cover Lane Kiffin’s debut with the Tigers, and be in Texas to watch the Longhorns face off against Ohio State the following week. And while it wasn’t announced right away, anyone paying attention could easily guess that GameDay wouldn’t miss Kiffin’s homecoming at Ole Miss in Week 3.
While Tennessee-Texas is a big matchup, GameDay had other options on the table this week, including ranked matchups between No. 4 Ole Miss and No. 21 Florida, No. 17 Iowa and No. 18 Michigan, and No. 20 Oregon and No. 12 USC.
Tennessee played host to GameDay last season ahead of the Volunteers’ matchup against No. 6 Georgia, with the Bulldogs taking a dramatic 44–41 win in overtime.
One storyline potentially worth watching—does Pat McAfee stick with the home team? McAfee, who has taken over as the final pick to close out the show, has taken the home team in each episode to start the year. Given how much of his performance is driven by playing off of the crowd, he could either stick with the Vols to pull off the upset, or make some enemies in Knoxville backing the Longhorns.
