ESPN celebrated the 500th road show for College GameDay in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, for the showdown between the LSU Tigers and Clemson Tigers. But the program was met with a rare instance where Mother Nature spoiled their plans.

The day started with a hyped up crowd at LSU ready to kick off the college football season in style. The program even had a live performance from Lainey Wilson of the GameDay theme song “Comin’ to your City” and a National Guard flyover, which is a wild thing for a football pregame show.

However, before the first hour of the program was done, College GameDay faced an unusual challenge — lightning.

Rece Davis informed viewers that, with lightning in the area, the show would have to move indoors and away from the live crowd on campus that gives the program its uniquely brilliant atmosphere. The host kicked it to Zubin Mehenti, who ran through some highlights of the college football action from Friday night while the transition took place.

Incredibly, it took just 12 minutes for the GameDay crew to get set up indoors on the stage at the LSU Student Union auditorium. It was a much quieter tone than we are used to on GameDay, but the panelists continued the show with a discussion of the top quarterbacks in college football heading into the new season.

Give all the credit in the world to the cast, producers, and technicians who make it all possible, because turning that quickly and carrying on a live show watched by millions with minimal interruption is an incredible effort by everyone involved.

Given College GameDay is built on being outdoors, it’s actually a surprise that things like this don’t happen more often. In fact, it’s difficult to recall the last time that the program was affected to this degree by a weather situation.

This couldn’t be an act of God; that is a verdict on what Lane Kiffin is trying to do at LSU… is it?
