Things got off to a rocky start on ESPN’s College GameDay Saturday, all because of Rece Davis’ wardrobe selection.
Kirk Herbstreit pointed out the obvious problem shortly after the show signed on from the Cal-Berkeley campus. It was still dark there, hours before the Golden Bears’ game against No. 8 Miami.
“Look at the tie he decided to wear,” Herbstreit said, holding Davis’ tie out for inspection.
Crowd response: “Boo!”
“I mean, what the heck is going on here?” Herbstreit asked. “Did you purposely wear a β Rece has got a Stanford tie on.”
Stanford’s primary color is cardinal red, of course. Cal’s archrival is located nearby in the Bay Area.
The crowd, along with Pat McAfee and one or two others on the GameDay set, began chanting, “Take it off!” Davis complied, to the delight of the crowd.

Saban got in a little jab at the crowd by kissing his tie but then removed it and waved it around his head like a lasso.

McAfee conveniently appeared at that exact moment with a tie bearing the Golden Bears’ colors. Because every workplace keeps a spare blue-and-gold striped tie handy for such situations, right? Saban donned the tie, and all was well.
The moral of the story for College GameDay analysts: Check your wardrobe selection before you get to the set.
