In a scene that appeared to be straight from ESPN’s College GameDay set, SportsCenter visited a wild tailgate party Thursday afternoon at Coastal Carolina ahead of its huge rivalry game against Appalachian State.

Announcers Matt Barrie and Dan Mullen welcomed Coastal Carolina head coach Tim Beck as they discussed the game over some local food. Then, as the fans behind the set shouted encouragement (“Chug! Chug! Chug!”), the three men grabbed beers, made a quick toast, and began chugging.

Mullen took a tiny sip, but Barrie did not imbibe at all, joking, “I went to Arizona State — I don’t need to prove anything.”

Then the two announcers turned to see Beck still chugging, channeling his inner Jason Kelce. The 58-year-old coach finished the beer before smashing the can against his forehead.

“There you go!” Barrie said.

Beck made stops as the offensive coordinator at Nebraska, Ohio State, Texas, and North Carolina State before taking over at Coastal Carolina in 2023. He’s quickly become a fan favorite.

The coach has earned a reputation for colorful behavior since arriving in Conway. He went viral last year after posing with Coastal Carolina’s bikini-clad dance team on the beach before the Hawaii Bowl.

As for Barrie and Mullen, they set a high bar for zaniness for Pat McAfee and the rest of the College GameDay crew this week.
