We sometimes see insiders tweeting news from other sports, or even from areas beyond sports. One long-running example of that is ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter relaying news of if famed groundhog “Punxsutawney Phil” sees his shadow on Groundhog Day or not. Here’s how Schefter posted about that Sunday:
Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, per sources. Six more weeks of winter.

Schefter has been doing this for more than a decade. Here’s what he tweeted back in 2015:
On Groundhog Day, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow – 6 more weeks of winter.

And he doesn’t only post about this in the years where the groundhog sees his shadow. Last year, Schefter posted about an early spring:
Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow today, which means he’s now predicting an early spring.

Of course, this isn’t the only case of Schefter branching out from football. He’s done that with other sports as well, including the NBA (where he’s occasionally worked as a sideline reporter and has even broken news at times). And he weighed in on the massive Luka Dončić-Anthony Davis trade Saturday, albeit with some NFL analogies:
Trying to think of a football trade as massive as this NBA one….
🏈Herschel Walker…?
🏈Eric Dickerson….?
🏈Matthew Stafford-Jared Goff…?There aren’t many, if any….. https://t.co/rsZGGB0kLr

An NFL equivalent: the Ravens trading Lamar Jackson+ to the Bengals in exchange for Joe Burrow+ — in the middle of the season.

There also were plenty of reactions to Schefter’s groundhog tweet bringing up that trade, including one from his ESPN colleague Field Yates:
He got any thoughts on the Luka trade?

The “per sources” here is also funny. And Joe Person of The Athletic had a great response there referencing the famed 1993 film Groundhog Day:
Sources close to Bill Murray.

At any rate, Schefter’s regular Groundhog Day tweets are interesting. And he recently spoke to Andrew Marchand about how he likes to get out of “the cage” of NFL reporting when he can. This is another example of that.
