The final score says that the No. 16 Michigan Wolverines beat the Western Michigan Broncos 13-12 on Saturday night at the Big House. But the general response from the college football world is much more that Western Michigan was robbed.
Western Michigan led 12-7 in the final seconds when Bryce Underwood’s Hail Mary try sailed out of the back of the end zone as the clock showed zero.
Anyone watching thought the game was over. NBC’s Noah Eagle even went wild on the play-by-play to declare Western Michigan’s victory:
“TIME EXPIRES! IT’S THE ATTACK FROM THE MAC! WESTERN MICHIGAN SENDS SHOCKWAVES ACROSS THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL WORLD AND PULLS OFF THE WEEK 1 STUNNER! THEY TAKE DOWN THE WOLVERINES 12-7!”
But an official review of the play ruled that there was one second remaining. The NBC crew of Eagle, color commentator Todd Blackledge, and rules analyst Terry McAulay couldn’t believe it.
So, Michigan was gifted an extra second, and they took advantage of the second Hail Mary try. Underwood connected with JJ Buchanan for a walk-off 47-yard touchdown pass.
After already delivering a seemingly game-winning call for Western Michigan, Eagle then had to switch it up and deliver a walk-off call for Michigan:
“IT IS CAUGHT! JJ BUCHANAN! TOUCHDOWN! A MIRACLE AT MICHIGAN STADIUM!”

How about the local radio calls of the finish for each team?
The Michigan call of the walk-off featured jubilation and plenty of incoherent noises from the radio booth, with Doug Karsch leading the way on play-by-play.

“IT IS CAUGHT! TOUCHDOWN, WOLVERINES! TOUCHDOWN! TOUCHDOWN! AN ABSOLUTE, ABSOLUTE, ABSOLUTE MIRACLE!… UN-BELIEVABLE!”
The Western Michigan call, on the other hand, was a somber one. Robin Hook delivered the play-by-play commentary of the heartbreaking finish:

“And it is caught for a touchdown. Touchdown on the final play of the game, and Michigan wins it on a Hail Mary with one second left in the game. Unbelievable. Final score: Michigan, 13; Western Michigan, 12.”
