Stormy Buonantony earned her stripes on Saturday when she attempted to interview Bill Belichick and received monotone, curt answers that left her hanging.

The ESPN college football sideline reporter handled it with class, telling her fellow broadcasters afterward that she “made it out alive” and noting that the North Carolina head coach had been much more talkative with the broadcasting crew in the days prior.

In addition to her ESPN role, Buonantony appears on Money Moves, a weekday show on VSiN. And while she might be moving forward from the awkward encounter, her co-host, Jonathan Von Tobel, had to get some thoughts off his chest on Monday’s episode.

After sharing an anecdote about a time when he was “accosted” by a stranger, and Buonantony stepped in to defend him from that “jerk,” he decided it was time to return the favor.

“Those same emotions that you felt on that fateful day, I felt this last Saturday watching you on the sideline with Bill Belichick,” said Von Tobel. “Bill Belichick was a complete and total a-hole to you. It was absolutely ridiculous. The people that are trying to come in and say, like, ‘oh, don’t cry about it’ or whatever, it was absolutely unprofessional.

“And if I may say, because I think you said this on the broadcast anyway, the thing that annoys me the most is two things… The first one is he was very nice to you in your meetings on Friday, was he not?”

“Yes,” replied Buonantony. “That’s what I said on the broadcast afterwards. Like, I had them come back to me and just say, yeah, it was a different experience just now than we had when we got to talk to him for 50 minutes and have a full conversation. It was story time with Bill.”

“Because again, for the people who don’t know, you establish— it’s not a relationship, but you establish connection with these people prior. So that is not the first time that you and Bill Belichick are interacting with each other,” said Von Tobel. “The second part, he pretended not to hear you on purpose. He is an absolute jerk, and especially somebody who had worked in media briefly but still had done it. Had talked and connected with you the day prior and did that to you. That is stupid. He is an a-hole, and I hope that all of you will agree with me on this.

“And a lot of people were trying to fight back on me. No, you don’t do that to my co-host. I am the one that gets to do those sort of things. I am the one that gets to push buttons. I am the one that gets to ignore on purpose. But you don’t do that to her, especially don’t do it on purpose. You’re a jerk, Belichick. I’m glad you lost the game.”

We have a feeling Belichick won’t be too concerned about the negative critique of his interview style. Plus, he’s probably got bigger things to worry about right now.

But still, good for Von Tobel for sticking up for his co-host, even if it might come back to bite her the next time she wants access to the ornery head coach.
