Lane Kiffin loves to f*ck around, and the SEC is attempting to see if they can make him find out.

On Tuesday, the SEC filed an amended complaint against LSU over the school’s potential plans to add former NFL players to its football roster.

The conference has also scheduled a vote of the conference presidents on whether to expel the school from the league.

While the latter is expected to be more performative than anything, the former suggests the powerhouse league won’t stop when it comes to enforcing its eligibility rules.

In the new legal filing, the SEC said that school presidents and chancellors will meet on Thursday to decide whether to terminate LSU as an SEC member. Section 3.1.5 of the SEC Constitution and Bylaws gives the presidents the “plenary power and authority with respect to all affairs of the Conference of any type or nature whatsoever,” including the power to “[t]ake all actions specified and contemplated in Article 3 [of the Constitution] in their sole discretion.”

It would require a vote of at least two-thirds of all presidents to terminate a school’s membership.

“The SEC and its member universities have the right to establish, through agreed-upon governance procedures, the rules under which they voluntarily compete and to expect those rules to be followed,” the SEC said in a statement. “A commitment to those rules, and to the core principles of the Southeastern Conference, is an essential element of SEC membership.

“Today’s filing is necessary to defend that right and preserve the Conference’s ability to govern competition among its members.”

One notable addition to the amended complaint comes courtesy of Kiffin and comments he made just this past weekend. At halftime of LSU’s 51-10 throttling of Clemson on Saturday, Kiffin said, “Imagine if we had pro players,” in reference to how much more his team might be winning by had they been able to suit up Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris, both of whom had signed NFL contracts before attempting to return to school. While both players had been cleared to re-join college football rosters by preliminary injunction, they opted to remain out for the time being so that all sides had a chance “to lower the temperature and look at the facts.”

The SEC alleges that Kiffin’s statements “stand in sharp contrast to the silence by the President and Athletic Director of LSU” and that “they confirm the lack of institutional control over the athletics program at LSU that is required by Article 6 of the SEC Constitution and by the remaining provisions of the Constitution and Bylaws.”

The SEC also added Louisiana Attorney General Elizabeth Murrill as a defendant in the amended complaint.

The SEC is seeking a temporary restraining order that would prevent LSU officials and their attorneys from taking “any action to block or interfere with the meeting scheduled for September 10th or with the exercise by the Conference and its member institutions of their First Amendment rights.”

Never a dull moment when it comes to SEC football, especially when Lane Kiffin opens his mouth.
