Rob Ryan USC press conference Screengrab via X

Rex Ryan may have failed at his public lobbying for the New York Jets coaching job, but twin brother Rob Ryan has a new gig at USC. And judging by his introductory press conference, the Trojans and the college football universe may not be ready for what’s about to come.

Rob Ryan has a ton of experience as a widely respected NFL defensive coordinator. He also won two Super Bowls as part of the staff of the New England Patriots dynasty in the early 2000s. But he hasn’t coached in college since the late 1990s when he was at Oklahoma State. Now he’s joined the Trojans as an assistant head coach and linebackers coach.

Both Ryan brothers are known for their unique personalities and that was on FULL DISPLAY at Rob Ryan’s first presser at USC. You can watch the full thing here, but it mostly consists of various name drops and stories noting all of his connections to the school and the football world throughout the years.

This clip from The Trojan Blade went viral on social media as Ryan tells an extended story about one of his former players, Kaluka Maiava, whose nephew Jayden is USC’s starting quarterback. It also features him wandering around the room away from the podium and absolute silence from the assembled press, save for one awkward chuckle at what can only be assumed was the punchline of the whole thing.

The only thing missing from this press conference was Ryan talking about wearing an onion on his belt because it was the style at the time.

And just think, this is the Ryan brother that is still working in coaching and not on television! Can USC give Rob Ryan press availability every week during the season? Because if so, it will be the highlight of the fall.
