Nick Saban is set to join the the cast of College GameDay this fall, pairing college football’s most legendary coach ever with its most popular studio show ever. In a recent interview, longtime GameDay voice Kirk Herbstreit revealed what he’s most excited about as Saban joins him on the desk on Saturdays.
“Nick Saban has such a great personality,” Herbstreit said on the latest episode of The Mental Game. “He’s very serious, he’s very X-O. But I think people are going to see him smile, they’re going to see him have some fun.”
Herbstreit got a taste of broadcasting alongside the legendary Alabama coach at this year’s NFL Draft, getting a feel for when to coax more brilliance out of Saban for the viewers at home.
“He’s at such a different level,” Herbstreit said. “If he can basically teach us every week … we’re just kind of at the beginning of where this thing might go with him being aboard.”
Herbstreit teased a potential Xs and Os segment with Saban as well as the shenanigans he and Pat McAfee are sure to get into each weekend.
Saban has been referenced as a potential heir to Lee Corso on GameDay, and Herbstreit’s blessing plus Saban’s performance in year one on the show would go a long way toward cementing a great relationship long-term.
In the interview, Herbstreit also discusses his mental health journey, his relationship with Corso, and the support he gets while traveling with his now-famous canine companion, Ben.
