Jon Gruden wants to get back into coaching. In particular, the Barstool Sports personality wants to coach college football, specifically in the SEC.
Gruden shared Inside The FFCA Ep. 21 on his YouTube channel. During the episode, Gruden visited the training camps of both college football’s Georgia Bulldogs and the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars. While most of Gruden’s time in coaching has come in the NFL, he told the Bulldogs
“The only reason I really came here is because I want to coach again,” Gruden said, H/T Daniel Hager, On3. “I’m being honest with you. I do not bullsh** either. I want to coach again. I’d die to coach in the SEC. I would love it. I would f***ing love it. I’m gonna tell you guys this. What I know about the SEC is it’s getting harder. The SEC is getting harder. They tell me Texas is in the SEC. They tell me Oklahoma is in the SEC. G**damn. Texas A&M.”
Gruden last served as a head coach in 2021 with the Las Vegas Raiders. Five games into that season, Gruden resigned after emails where he used offensive language were revealed. In 2023, Gruden served as a consultant to the New Orleans Saints. In 2024, he signed with Barstool Sports.
This is not the first time this summer that Gruden has teased a coaching comeback. Dave Portnoy has also said that he believes Gruden will coach in the NFL again.
Gruden’s college coaching experience includes a two-year stint (1986-1987) as a Tennessee graduate assistant, one year (1989) as Southeast Missouri State’s passing game coordinator, one year (1989) as the University of Pacific’s tight ends coach and one year (1991) as Pittsburgh’s receivers coach.
