It’s not enough that Deion Sanders and his Colorado Buffaloes are likely on their way to a bowl game. The head coach won’t settle for just any bowl game.
He wants a “nice” bowl. For Peggy, the team’s famous centenarian superfan.
The Buffaloes beat Arizona 34-7 Saturday, and Sanders was naturally in a great mood as he met reporters in his press conference. (Reporters universally agree: A happy Sanders at press conferences is much more fun than a surly Sanders.)
A reporter asked Sanders about the team’s progress, and he offered a straight answer: “We ain’t where we want to be, but we sure ain’t where we used to be.”
Then, the reporter asked about the team’s bowl prospects (one win in the Buffs’ final five games will make them eligible), and the coach quickly shut down that talk, saying Colorado wants a “nice” bowl. For Peggy, of course.
Peggy Coppom is the Colorado Buffaloes’ biggest superfan, who has cheered for the team since the 1940s (her twin sister, Betty, who died in 2020, was also a huge fan). Coppom turns 100 on Nov. 19, and a “nice” bowl would a great present.
“We don’t want to just get Peggy to a bowl,” Sanders said. “Peggy’s got great taste. Peggy’s sophisticated. She’s a lady. So we want to make sure we get her to a ‘nice’ bowl, not just any bowl.”

Coppom is a familiar figure around the Buffs program and has hung out with Coach Prime at events.

Sanders did turn serious for a moment and clarified what he meant about the team not being quite where he wants.
“We want to win,” Sanders said. “We want to win at all costs. β¦Β I don’t want to just win on the field, I want to win off the field. I want to win in the classroom. I want to win in the communities. β¦ I want to win in all facets of life with these young men and that’s something I think we’re on our way to doing.”
