Dan Patrick has no respect for College Football Playoff hindsight bias: ‘Tell me that before they get blown out ‘

Dan Patrick has a bone to pick — a pet peeve, if you will.

The legendary radio personality and host of The Dan Patrick Show, is fed up with the Monday Morning Quarteback-ing, the revisionist history and the hindsight bias that takes place in the aftermath of these College Football Playoff games.

“I don’t want to hear these analysts after the fact tell me that somebody shouldn’t be in the Playoff,” said Patrick. “You know, when Kirk Herbstreit basically says, ‘Indiana shouldn’t have been here.’ But Herbie wasn’t alone; there was a lot of other people that said, ‘Well, they shouldn’t have been here.’ OK. ‘SMU shouldn’t have been here.’ OK. I’m not blaming SMU or Indiana. They did everything they were supposed to do.

“And tell me that before they get blown out — not after. Did you tell me that Tennessee shouldn’t have been there? No, they earned the right to be there; they just got blown out. But, this after-the-fact, where you have people going, ‘No, they should’ve never been there.’ OK, if Arizona State gets blown out, people would’ve said, ‘Well, they never should’ve got a first-round bye.’ Right? That’s the way it works.”

Well, some may have argued that Arizona State was “outclassed” by Texas. But that some — SEC Network analyst Benjamin Watson — are feeding into the same narratives that Patrick seeks to diminish.

“Are you saying that about Oregon? That Oregon shouldn’t have been the No. 1 team in the country?” he continued. “‘They shouldn’t have been the No. 1 seed; they got blown out by Ohio State.’ It’s really easy to do that today — do it before. After the fact? I have no respect for that.”

While it would be hard to argue against Oregon’s playoff berth after their Rose Bowl performance, and you’d likely need your head examined otherwise, it’s fair to bring to the table what would’ve turned Nick Saban into an internet troll.

And Oregon’s draw aside, Patrick’s point stands.

There’s always someone, somewhere, willing to challenge the consensus after the fact.

“Arizona State and I was worried because I thought, ‘Just make it competitive.’ It’s weird, I rooted for Indiana, SMU, Boise State, Arizona State, to make it competitive,” Patrick explained. “I didn’t think they were going to win, but I thought, ‘Just make it competitive, so we don’t get this revisionist history.’ ‘Well, they never should’ve been there.'”

And who could blame him?

“This is on college football,” he added. “College football created the scenario where they said, ‘Hey if you win your conference, you get a first-round bye.’ It doesn’t make sense. We said it doesn’t make sense. We said it before people realized it didn’t make sense. They’re going to change it. They’re going to have — and logic will step in — which is really rare in college football, but they will eventually get around to fixing this.”

But fixing revisionist history is a whole lot easier said than done.
