ESPN play-by-play announcer Chris Fowler delivered a strong contender for announcer jinx of the year during the LSU-Ole Miss college football showdown on Saturday night in Oxford.
In the third quarter, Ole Miss set up kicker Lucas Carneiro for a 53-yard field goal attempt. Fowler made it clear that he had supreme confidence in Carneiro making the kick.
“It will give the elite kicker, Lucas Carneiro… It’s almost a gimme here,” Fowler said.
“I’m not trying to jinx him,” Fowler continued. “But I could watch this guy kick all day. The motion is beautiful. The sweet spot of a football, Mike Black tells me, is about the size of a dime. This guy hits the sweet spot incredibly well. Just drives the ball. This is from 53 yards, remember.”
Carneiro’s kick was nowhere close.

“Right on cue,” Fowler said. “Lucas. Lucas, I swear. I build you up. And that was the worst kick he’s ever made.”
“It’s all your fault,” color commentator Kirk Herbstreit said. “It’s all your fault.”
“Don’t at me, please,” Fowler said. “There’s no such thing as a jinx.”
Carneiro was a remarkable 12-of-14 in his career on field goal attempts from 50-plus yards entering Saturday, so Fowler did have good reason to believe in the kicker, even from 53 yards.
And fortunately for Fowler, that missed kick didn’t lead to a Rebels loss, or else he’d probably hear it from Ole Miss fans for a while.
No. 8 Ole Miss came away with a thrilling 32-24 win over No. 7 LSU in Lane Kiffin’s return to Oxford.
