Michigan State scored a huge win over archrival Michigan Friday night, but head coach Tom Izzo had some issues with his team’s turnovers.

How much did turnovers hurt the Spartans? Enough that Izzo hit the Kansas City Chiefs with a stray after the game, referencing their disastrous Super Bowl LIX turnovers.

Michigan State had 11 turnovers against the Wolverines, but only two in the second half. A reporter asked Izzo what he said to his team at halftime about the problem.

“Threatened ’em,” Izzo said. “Went old school on them and threatened ’em at halftime. Turnovers, I give (Michigan) credit for some of them, I give us blame for a lot of them. …

“Those were turnovers that did lead to touchdowns. Those are bad turnovers — just ask the Kansas City Chiefs. Those don’t work in sports.”

Izzo could at least be happy none of the Spartans’ turnovers led to game-changing momentum like, say, Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Cooper DeJean’s pick six against Patrick Mahomes in the first half.

Still, some fans were amused to see Izzo throwing the Chiefs under the bus.
