Mark Pope perfectly trolls SEC basketball’s .500 winning percentage

Maybe Karl Ravech wasn’t in on the joke when he cited SEC basketball’s .500 winning percentage, but Kentucky head coach Mark Pope gets it.

While meeting with the media Thursday afternoon, Pope was asked about the SEC’s often being credited as the best conference in college basketball despite having had a .500 winning percentage since early January. And Pope seemed eager to play along.

There’s been a lot of talk about the SEC being the best conference in college basketball, but the league is still .500 since the start of conference play.

“I think it’s been a really disappointing start to conference play,” Pope joked. “I feel like we’re not living up to the expectations just being at .500 as a conference. I’m kind of looking around at the other programs in the league like, ‘Guys, we’ve got to pick this up. This is embarrassing.’ And so, we’ll find a way. I believe in this league, I think we definitely have an upside and we’re gonna work really hard to get there.”

The joke here, is the fact that of course the SEC has a .500 winning percentage since beginning conference play. Because when two teams from the same conference play against each other, one team will win and the other will lose. After one game, the record will be 1-1, after 82 games, the record will be 82-82, which is something ESPN play-by-play voice Karl Ravech missed earlier this week while calling an SEC game between Alabama and Texas.

“We know how dominant they were in the nonconference season, the SEC,” Ravech said. “They were 185-23. Since January 4, into Tuesday, the SEC teams are 82-82. It’s not as if one team or two teams or three — they’re 82-82. There’s been no ability pull away, there’s no dominant group of teams.”

The facetious narrative gained traction last month after social media account @pickelo7 sarcastically posted about the SEC’s .500 winning percentage since starting conference play. The problem here is that Ravech didn’t appear to get the joke, while Pope clearly did. Ravech didn’t chuckle or imply he understood why the SEC had an 82-82 record in conference play heading into Tuesday night. He used it as a legitimate stat to prove the SEC is one giant conference of mediocrity.

After being criticized on social media, Ravage attempted to defend himself. But even in his defense, he bizarrely cited the 82-82 record as a clear example of their parity in the SEC. After he was criticized for his defense, Ravech eventually decided to “take the L.” Less than 24 hours later, the narrative made its way to Pope, who was thankfully in on the joke.
