Tony Romo’s BAC nearly twice the legal limit when measured after arrest

More details surrounding Tony Romo’s arrest came to light on Tuesday.

A report from NBC affiliate WTMJ cited court records that showed Romo’s blood-alcohol content was 0.15, nearly twice the legal limit, when tested after his arrest in July.

Body cam footage of Romo’s arrest published by TMZ shortly after his arrest showed him performing poorly on a field sobriety test. The video also showed him refusing to take a breath test at the time of his arrest, but apparently at some point, his blood-alcohol level was checked. Romo also reportedly had an open bottle of alcohol in his vehicle when he was initially pulled over.

Romo was booked on a first-offense operating while intoxicated (OWI) charge and was cited for first-offense operating while intoxicated, unsafe passing on the right side, and possessing open intoxicants in his vehicle.

Romo issued his first public statement about the arrest earlier on Tuesday via an Instagram post. “This morning, I faced a recent personal failure by pleading no contest to a civil offense for OWI in Wisconsin. I own this completely,” Romo wrote. “Multiple back surgeries ended my career earlier than I expected and left me with constant, debilitating pain. That pain led to a dependence on pain medication, and my efforts to get off those medications led to an over-reliance on alcohol.”

CBS placed Romo on indefinite leave from his role alongside Jim Nantz in the network’s No. 1 NFL booth shortly after the arrest, with J.J. Watt tapped to take over as an analyst.

At the end of his statement, Romo hinted at a return to the network, writing, “As I turn my attention to my health, my family, and, in time, my return to CBS, I kindly ask for privacy during this period.”

But despite Romo’s comments, his future with CBS remains an open question. Many in media believe Romo will not return to the network, as CBS could use the arrest as a reason to get out of Romo’s massive contract. When Puck’s John Ourand reached out to CBS after Romo’s statement, the network declined to comment and pointed to the initial statement it posted about his leave.

Romo’s court date is currently set for September 21. Between now and then, Watt will have a few chances to work with Nantz on CBS NFL broadcasts. If the pairing gets off to a strong start, CBS might think it easier to stick with the duo and cut Romo loose.
