Tony Romo is facing three more citations related to his OWI arrest in Wisconsin in July.
According to a report from TMZ Sports, Romo was cited for first-offense operating while intoxicated, unsafe passing on the right side, and possessing open intoxicants in his vehicle.
Romo was pulled over on July 23 and arrested after failing a field sobriety test. He reportedly had an open bottle of alcohol in his car at the time of his arrest. Body cam footage of the incident was widely circulated, adding extra embarrassment to the already troubling situation.
Since then, Romo has been suspended indefinitely from his role alongside Jim Nantz in the No. 1 booth at CBS, with J.J. Watt stepping into his spot.
With the suspension in place, Romo’s long-term future at CBS is uncertain. Sports media insider Andrew Marchand of The Athletic has said he believes that CBS has wanted to get out of its massive 10-year, $180 million contract with Romo that was signed in 2020. A morality clause in the agreement could allow the network an easy exit.
While Romo was extremely popular in his early days in the booth, his performance has taken a notable downward turn in recent years, and fan and critical sentiment alike has largely turned against him. In the meantime, Watt and several other recent players-turned-commentators have watched their star rise to the level that Romo once held amongst NFL fans.
Romo’s immediate future remains extremely unclear. Given that the suspension is “indefinite,” it could technically be called at any time. Unsurprisingly, Romo seems to be hoping to hold on to his seat in the booth.
“Tony accepts full responsibility for his actions and has taken proactive steps to ensure that this isolated civil matter is properly resolved,” a spokesperson for Romo told TMZ Sports. “We are working with local authorities to bring this matter to a close and we are communicating with CBS about next steps.”
Ultimately, the next steps are entirely out of Romo’s hands. A great performance from Watt that earns rave reviews alongside Nantz in Week 1 could mean the end of the Romo era at CBS.
