Super Bowl LVIII is set. After another great NFL season, it’s down to two teams vying for the Lombardi Trophy. In a rematch of Super Bowl LIV, the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs will face off. This time, as opposed to Miami, they’ll take each other on at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The Chiefs struggled to be in sync for most of the season. While they won the AFC West Division again, the Chiefs offense was not nearly as potent as it had been in recent years. A lack of chemistry was apparent. Former MVP Patrick Mahomes was his usual self, but something felt missing. Travis Kelce had a down season by his standards. They didn’t appear to have a No. 1 receiver. None of that turned out to matter. The Chiefs won against the Miami Dolphins on a cold night in KC. Then they defeated the Buffalo Bills in another thrilling rodeo. Lastly, they took on the Baltimore Ravens in Baltimore in the AFC Championship Game and came away with a 17-10 victory. Another Super Bowl for the Chiefs is coming in 2024 after they made their seventh straight AFC Championship.
San Francisco got to Super Bowl 58 in a gutty fashion. The 49ers escaped with a win against the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Divisional Round. Then, they completed a massive 17-point comeback against the Detroit Lions in the NFC Championship Game. Brock Purdy put up MVP-caliber numbers, while Christian McCaffrey did the same on the ground and through the air. The 49ers’ defense looked sharp as always this season, and their assembly of skill position players stood out yet again. This is a team hunting for their first Super Bowl since 1994, and this core has been to the dance before. Now they have to try and pull it off again in the Super Bowl in 2024.
Kansas City hopes to win its fourth Super Bowl championship. The team has won Lombardi Trophies in 1970, 2019, and 2022. Len Dawson helped the Chiefs win their first Super Bowl in the 1970 season against the Minnesota Vikings. Then, Mahomes and the Chiefs won their second title against the 49ers at Super Bowl LIV. Last season, the Chiefs stunned the Philadelphia Eagles to win their third championship at Super Bowl LVII in Glendale, Arizona. Four championships would tie the Chiefs with the Packers and the New York Giants for the third-most in NFL history.
Meanwhile, San Francisco hopes to win its sixth Super Bowl. The Niners won in 1981, 1984, 1988, 1989, and 1994. The 49ers won their first in 1981 against the Cincinnati Bengals at Super Bowl XVI. Then, Joe Montana and the Niners crushed Dan Marino and the Miami Dolphins at Super Bowl XIX. San Francisco went on to win back-to-back championships in the 1988 and 1989 seasons, with Montana posting an immaculate postseason en route to their Super Bowl XXIV win. Steve Young and the 49ers then won Super Bowl XXIX over the San Diego Chargers in 1994, their last championship.
