Cleveland Browns quarterback Jameis Winston seemed to be in a different place Sunday before making his first start at quarterback since 2022.
NFL on CBS reporter Amanda Balionis spoke with Winston before his start against the Baltimore Ravens and asked some football-related questions, and got some interesting responses.
“Jameis, I can tell that you’re taking it in right now … Ken Dorsey (Browns offensive coordindator) said that he’s been preaching to you to play smart but not conservative,” Balionis said. “What do you expect from yourself?”
“This is a day that the Lord has made, I will be glad and rejoice in it,” Winston said.
“You’re looking really focused right now,” Balionis wisely observed. “You told us this week that everyone inside this building believes that this is the time you guys can turn it around. What’s been the message?”
“Unwavering faith. Ultimate belief,” Winston said. “Depending on the Lord — that’s all we got.”
“You told me, no nerves, just excitement and butterflies,” Balionis said. “Still feel that way?”
“Unwavering faith. Ultimate belief. Dependence on the Lord,” Winston said.
“The message is clear, guys,” Balionis concluded.
“Unwavering faith. Ultimate belief.”

While it’s possible some critics might believe Winston was just dodging the questions, he may have just been locked-in to a spiritual mode before the game. Winston has spoken openly about his faith many times in recent years.
Kudos to Balionis for trying several approaches to get a football-related answer.
