UCLA celebrated “Bill Walton Day” Sunday, in a celebration befitting the colorful former basketball star and broadcaster.
CBS Sports broadcast the game between UCLA and Ohio State, and covered many of the tributes to the late Walton, who died May 27 at age 71. Before the game, UCLA played a video tribute to Walton at Pauley Pavilion, where he won two national championships and three National Player of the Year Awards from 1972-74.
The video featured the song βBox of Rainβ by the Grateful Dead, Walton’s favorite band.
Midway through the first half, CBS interviewed former UCLA and NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who shared his memories and thoughts on Walton.
“I think Bill’s love for the game, and his gift of gab and love of people, all of those things combined to make him an ideal broadcaster,” Abdul-Jabbar said.
“I really enjoyed listening to his broadcasts, because he was informed and he had a sense of humor. That’s so important.”

Fans got tie-dye T-shirts, something Walton loved to wear. Add some Grateful Dead music, appearances by Abdul-Jabbar and other former Bruins greats and it’s the kind of day Walton would have really enjoyed.
