Just before halftime on Thursday Night Football, Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit talked about the possible food offerings in the Caesars Superdome media room. Maybe some Cajun food, maybe some creole. Either way, it was clear the two men were looking forward a short break.

Down 16-3 to the Denver Broncos as the first half’s final seconds ticked off, the New Orleans Saints completed a short pass play and appeared ready to let the final four seconds expire.

“That’s the way this half is going to end in all likelihood,” Michaels said. “But [the Saints are] gonna take another timeout, I guess. Alright. For what practical purpose, you tell me?”

“I don’t know,” Herbstreit replied.

“Even you’re stumped. To stump you is hard,” Michaels concluded.

While the Saints discussed who knows what during the timeout, Michaels and Herbstreit talked food, and what might be waiting in the media room.

“Are we going Cajun or creole?” Michaels asked.

“It’s a great town for food,” Herbstreit observed.

“Sure,” Michaels agreed.

And then the Saints returned to the field to kneel down and end the half.

“Well, you take a timeout, that’s the only time I’ve ever seen and a kneel down follows,” Michaels said.

“And then they’ll get booed off the field,” Herbstreit said, as fans rained down boos.

“Yeah, whatever,” Michaels said.

Amazon Prime analyst Richard Sherman was equally baffled by the timeout and called out head coach Dennis Allen during the halftime show.

“Dennis Allen, you call a timeout so we can watch your quarterback take a knee?!”
