The NHL and Prime Video are partnering with Box to Box Films, the production company behind Netflix’s Drive to Survive and other sports docuseries.
On Thursday, the parties announced a new behind-the-scenes docuseries covering “the NHL’s biggest teams and most compelling characters” through the 2023-24 NHL season. The untitled series is set to premiere globally on Prime Video in the fall.
The NHL released a brief sizzle reel of the project on YouTube.
Here’s more from the release.
The series will feature in-depth interviews with key players, their rivals and those in their closest inner circle – teammates, coaches, and family. The series will also reveal what life on-and-off the ice is really like for the league’s top players. From the quiet reflective moments to the speed and intensity of being on hockey’s biggest stage – revealing the talent, grit, and sacrifice it takes to make it in the NHL. Superstar players followed in the series include Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid; Florida Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk; New York Rangers captain Jacob Trouba; Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl; Boston Bruins teammates David Pastrnak and Jeremy Swayman; Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes; Vegas Golden Knights forward Jack Eichel; Toronto Maple Leafs forward William Nylander; Nashville Predators forward Filip Forsberg; and Colorado Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog, among others.
In addition, crews will remain embedded with McDavid, Tkachuk and their teammates, families and friends during the Oilers’ and Panthers’ pursuit of hockey supremacy in the 2024 Stanley Cup Final.
Box To Box’s catalog of docuseries has been tightly linked to Netflix recently, with Drive to Survive, the golf-centric Full Swing, and the now-canceled tennis series Break Point all airing on the streamer.
Over the last year or so, the NHL has had a strong and growing relationship with Amazon and its Prime Video streaming service. Last fall, the NHL and Prime Video partnered on a pair of documentaries, Saving Sakic and Chosen One: Alexandre Daigle, that are available on ESPN+ in the United States. The NHL also cut a deal with Amazon earlier this year to bring Monday night games to Prime Video in Canada beginning next season.
This seems like a coup for both the NHL and Prime Video. Box To Box’s sports content has been so connected to Netflix over the years that any new project landing at another outlet is a surprise. The NHL is also the first of America’s “Big Four” leagues to partner with Box To Box, a major achievement for the league.
