While Kenny and Keith Lucas spent years working on various projects as both actors and producers, 2021’s Judas and the Black Messiah, co-written and co-produced by the brothers, is regarded as the duo’s best work.
The film, a biography of activist Fred Hampton, was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.
In the time since, the Lucas Brothers have been more focused on their acting careers, but it looks like their directorial debut is on the horizon.
On Monday, Deadline reported that the brothers, along with Mookie Thompson, would be directing a documentary exploring the friendship between rapper Derek “Flash Garments” Shaw and All Elite Wrestling world champion Swerve Strickland.
The documentary follows Strickland and Shaw through the hardships of Strickland being released by WWE and Shaw being kicked out of Kanye West’s crew, the reclamation and rebuilding both did, and how their friendship has led to Strickland becoming AEW’s first African-American world champion.
“Flash Garments and I were introduced to one another at very interesting times in our lives,” Strickland said in a statement to Deadline. “We knew we were meant to make history with one another by collaborating hip hop and pro wrestling on a different level. The Lucas brothers captured it in the best light possible.”
Garments worked on Strickland’s current AEW theme song, as well.
There’s no word yet on when the documentary will be released.
