Jim Ross revealed that his AEW contract is up at the end of August, but the 73-year-old commentator doesn’t seemed interested in testing the free agency market.
On a live episode of his Grilling JR podcast, the legendary pro wrestling announcer said he’s happy with his part-time schedule and has longtime agent Barry Bloom handling renewal talks with AEW.
“I think my contract’s up in August,” Ross said. “I’m not planning on going anywhere. I like my part-time schedule. It lets me keep my batteries charged. I like working for Tony Khan because he’s always been fair and civil to me. And that I appreciate.”
Ross also added that he’s “hopeful” his contract will be renewed, and that his health will hold up so he can contribute more moving forward. In June, he revealed that he is now cancer-free after undergoing surgery to treat colon cancer.
He since returned to call AEW All In pay-per-view at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, on July 12. And in
a couple of weeks time, he’ll head to London for Forbidden Door, the AEW–New Japan Pro Wrestling crossover event at the O2 Arena. Ross has his sights on calling his first match at the legendary ECW Arena (now 2300 Arena) when AEW begins a residency in Philadelphia at the end of August.
Throughout his recovery, Ross has repeatedly praised AEW owner and president Tony Khan for his unwavering support.
“I’m very indebted to AEW for hiring me and bringing me on board. And Tony Khan has been amazingly wonderful during my illness,” the WWE Hall of Famer said. “He supported me wholeheartedly and I really do appreciate that. That’s the way a boss should act, should do is take care of your people. And Tony Khan has certainly taken good care of me, and I plan on being reciprocal and doing my best to take care of him in my role going forward.”
With cancer behind him and perhaps a new contract on the horizon, “Good ol’ JR” is ready to keep working as he extends his remarkable 50-plus-year run in pro wrestling.
