Ratings News and Notes

  • Reactions to Donald Trump’s rhetoric on Sep. 22 suggesting that NFL owners to “fire” players who kneel during the national anthem resulted in several NFL pregame shows on Sep. 24 saw significant ratings boosts: NFL Network’s “NFL GameDay Morning” (927,000 viewers) drew its most-watched edition ever within an NFL regular season; “The NFL Today” on CBS (3.2 household rating) with a guest appearance from former NBA great Charles Barkley scored its highest-rated edition since 2010; year-to-year, “Fox NFL Kickoff” (1.3 household rating) was up 30 percent and “Fox NFL Sunday” (3.7 household rating) was up 9 percent.

  • Several tidbits about local ratings for Week 3 actions in the NFL on Sep. 24:

The Baltimore Ravens’ 44-7 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in London, England was watched by approximately 425,000 viewers in the Baltimore TV market; +6,000 than the Ravens’ season-opening win vs. Bengals on Sep. 10, -27,000 than Ravens’ home opener vs. Browns on Sep. 17. The game aired on CBS affiliates in Baltimore and Jacksonville while it streamed worldwide on Yahoo and Verizon’s Go90 service. (Source: Baltimore Sun)

The Seattle Seahawks’ 33-27 loss to the Tennessee Titans posted a 34.5 local rating in the Seattle-Tacoma market, 15 percent below the 40.7 local rating average for the Seahawks’ first two games, at Green Bay and vs. San Francisco. (Source: KIRO) As for the Nashville TV market, it was the Titans’ highest-rated of the season to-date with a 22.6 local rating (approx. 233,000 Nashville homes). Titans had drawn a 19.1 rating vs. Jaguars on Sep. 17 and a 21.9 rating vs. Raiders on Sep. 10. (Source: Tennessean)

The Green Bay Packers’ 27-24 win over the Cincinnati Bengals on CBS that featured former Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo as analyst posted a 13.3 local rating in Dallas-Fort Worth, the home market for the Cowboys. (Source: Dallas Morning News)

  • In a rare feat in the world of MMA om TV, Spike’s Bellator 183 (598,000 viewers) from Sep. 23 outdrew a UFC event on the same weekend — UFC Fight Night (502,000 viewers) that featured Shogun vs. Saint Preux on Sep. 22.
