Vin Scully is not a man that would normally incite some controversy, but even he has an opinion on the Pete Rose in Cooperstown debate.

In the March edition of the AARP bulletin, Scully was asked if he’d induct Rose if he had a say.

”I wouldn’t,” Scully said. ”Should he be in? He should be. But by his own hand, he locked the door and kept himself outside.”

Rose’s recent application for reinstatement to baseball was denied by Rob Manfred last fall because Rose still lives in Las Vegas and frequents casinos, which shows that he hasn’t undergone the substantial character change that baseball is after. That application may be the last change Rose has to earn reinstatement to baseball, and unless there’s a change to the rules of the Hall of Fame, Rose will not be inducted in his lifetime.

This is a rare moment for Scully who rarely talks about players or controversies like this in public, but as this will be his 67th and final season in the Dodgers booth, there might not be many more chances for Scully to answer these questions.

If you are eager to see the entire March AARP Bulletin, it will be available to the public on Tuesday.
