Sports memorabilia is a huge industry. Some of the items that involve the greatest moments in sports history are quite treasured, but when they’re lost, it leaves a hole with the athletes and collectors. So Smithsonian Channel will air a six-part series that looks for lost items and the truth behind what happened. “Sports Detectives” premieres April 24 at 9 p.m. ET with CBS Sports Network reporter Lauren Gardner and private investigator and former FBI agent Kevin Barrows.
Some of the items they search for are some of the most iconic treasures in sports history including the American flag that was draped over Jim Craig after the U.S. Gold Medal victory over Finland in the 1980 Winter Olympics, Muhammad Ali’s gold medal which he supposedly threw into the Ohio River, Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point game ball, the ball that was allegedly caught by Franco Harris in the so-called “Immaculate Reception,” and Secretariat’s saddle.
The show will find people who either claim to have these items or find where they might be located and look into the stories behind their journeys to how they got to their destinations.
Barrows is credited as one of the men who took down the Mob on Wall Street in a huge securities fraud case and he’s been a consultant for pro sports leagues as a security and investigative expert.
This is certainly quite the interesting premise and one that will be good Spring filler when live sports calms down.
