during the NFL game at the University of Phoenix Stadium on September 13, 2015 in Glendale, Arizona.

The most relieved person to see the NFL partner with the Los Angeles Rams for this year’s Hard Knocks might be New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton.  The coach, who just signed a brand new five year extension with the Saints, has never been shy of voicing his discomfort regarding the show.  In January, Payton said that he would never be videotaped releasing a player in anticipation of his team maybe being showcased by HBO this summer.  He’s much more Bill Belichick than Rex Ryan when it comes to his relationship with the media, too.

Payton appeared on the Dan Patrick Show yesterday to talk about Hard Knocks, who the Saints were a leading candidate for before the Rams were selected.  In the interview with Patrick, Payton put on his media critic hat and also touched on some things that needed freshened up with the show.

“There are some elements to the show that I think people enjoy, but I think it’s always challenging when some of it, you know, when you get into your sixth or seventh year and it’s the same scene – the player walks into the head coach’s office and he’s going to be cut on camera.  It’s just switch the team and then let’s cut to a sprinkler in 100 degree heat.”

The format for Hard Knocks can be a bit repetitive and that’s presumably why the NFL went in the direction of the Los Angeles Rams.  Now it doesn’t have to be just players getting cuts and sprinklers in the sun, but the excitement of moving vans and relocating a franchise halfway across the country.

Of course, if Hard Knocks really wants to add some spice, they should do some pieces with disgruntled football fans in St. Louis to see what they think about the Rams’ move.
