A source confirmed to US Weekly that Lady Gaga is going to headline the Super Bowl LI (51) halftime show this upcoming February.
After rumors surfaced of Adele being named headliner, it appears that the multi-platinum singer and current star of American Horror Story will be performing in Houston, Texas on February 5. Lady Gaga joins such recent performers as Coldplay, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, Beyonce and Madonna as Super Bowl halftime show headliners.
Lady Gaga has had experience with the kind of big audience expected for the Super Bowl. She performed at the Super Bowl last season, singing an unforgettable rendition of the Star Spangled Banner.
After singing the National Anthem, it seemed Lady Gaga appreciated the opportunity and she put it in perspective the importance of singing at an event like the Super Bowl. She said, “This is one of the highest honors of my career. I get a chance to sing for all the athletes — who have been working so hard their whole lives for this moment — the coaches, as well as the fans in the stands who are waiting for this moment. I think it marks what being an American is all about.”
Having Lady Gaga perform at the Super Bowl would make sense for the NFL. The halftime show is more about attracting non-football fans to watch and to bring in someone with worldwide mass appeal such as Lady Gaga, it should bring in a lot of viewers despite how entertaining the game or the commercials will be.
While an official announcement hasn’t been made yet, Lady Gaga has a new album called “Joanne” that is going to be released on October 21. So, if true, I would have to imagine an announcement from the NFL and Lady Gaga’s people would be made a week or so before the release.
