Last week we took notice of Los Angeles Dodgers star Yaisel Puig’s new cleats that paid honor to the legendary Vin Scully. So did Major League Baseball, and they would like to see Puig keep those cleats off the field in the future.

If you missed it last week, Puig is wearing custom Nike cleats with an image of Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully on the side with the phrase “Win it for Vin!” on one side of the cleat, and a microphone and Twitter hashtag  of #ITFDB (for Scully’s trademark “It’s time for Dodger baseball” phrase) on the inside of the other cleat. It was a nice tribute to the Dodgers great from one of the team’s popular young players, but Puig has received a request from the league office to refrain from wearing the cleats again, or he will be fined $5,000 each time he wears the cleats. The cleats fall outside the league’s uniform policy.

Of course, Major League Baseball seemed perfectly fine pimping these cleats on their Twitter accounts…

… but hey, at least they got over 600 retweets and more than 1,600 Twitter likes before they asked Puig to no longer wear the cleats, right?

If you are wondering why MLB would make such a request, it has nothing to do with paying honor to an individual. It’s actually the color scheme of the cleat. According to MLB’s dress code policy, cleats may only utilize official team colors. So unless the Dodgers trade Puig to the New York Mets, it looks as though Puig will need to decide to retire his Scully shoes, use them sparingly or toss the request in the trash and keep doing his thing regardless of fines he would subject himself to. Perhaps Puig can have these Nike cleats altered to remove the orange. They would still look pretty sleek and would continue to be a unique way to honor the iconic voice of the Dodgers.
