Greg McElroy

Greg McElroy will shift from the studio to the booth for the upcoming college football season, ESPN announced Thursday.

The former Alabama quarterback and SEC Nation host will call games alongside veteran Dave Pasch for Saturday ABC/ESPN broadcasts. He will replace Brian Griese as Pasch’s color commentator, as Griese will partner with Steve Levy.

ESPN also announced some other college-football personnel changes:

– Pasch and fellow play-by-play man Bob Wischusen have both had their contracts extended.
– Reporter Allison Williams will join the Saturday team of Wischusen and Brock Huard. Williams had previously worked Friday night college football broadcasts

Here’s a statement from ESPN senior coordinating producer Lee Fitting:

“The quality and depth of our on-air lineup continues to be one of the strengths of our college football coverage. Dave and Bob will again be front and center on high impact games in key ESPN and ABC timeslots for us. We look forward to seeing Greg and Allison in their new roles.”

ESPN has drastically rearranged its college football lineup, with Joe Tessitore replacing Brad Nessler, Levy moving to the booth and now McElroy leaving his studio position to call games regularly. McElroy is only 28 years old and barely two years retired from the NFL, but clearly ESPN views him as a rising star. We’ll keep an eye on how he handles his new role.
