Saturday was rife with news about the Donald Trump Presidential campaign. One of the items making the rounds was the Trump claim that he received a letter from the National Football League displeased over the conflict with two of three Presidential debates this fall. In an interview with ABC’s This Week, Trump said the NFL expressed its dismay over the conflict and he said the Hillary Clinton campaign must have been behind the scheduling of the debates. However, the NFL issued a statement that it did not send a letter to Trump. Now the Trump campaign is softening its stance about the NFL letter.
Instead of saying the NFL communicated with Trump, the campaign is now backing away from its original stance. In a statement issued to This Week, the campaign now states it was told about the conflicts with the NFL games by “a source.”
“Mr. Trump was made aware of the conflicting dates by a source close to the league.”
Well, that changes everything. Going from direct communication to “a source,” certainly makes the story different. And if it’s a source who let the Trump campaign know about the conflict? Does this make him an insider like Adam Schefter, Jason La Canfora or Jay Glazer?
Pro Football Talk says there are plenty of sources who could have let Trump know about the debate conflicts:
The source could have been his friend Tom Brady. The source could have been three-time former NFL coach Mike Shanahan, who hosted a fundraiser for Trump in Colorado. The source could have been one of the various owners he knows. The source could have been Paul Hicks, former NFL P.R. chief and father of Trump’s current P.R. chief, Hope Hicks.
So as we move on from this story, we’re reminded that Trump did once call the NFL boring so perhaps giving the league some competition with the Presidential debates will spice things up!
