The strict rules and regulations of Major League Baseball are a little looser in Spring Training. That leads to weird things happening sometimes… like batters stepping to the plate with no number on their jersey.
Reds prospect Jake Cave turned into an international man of mystery for a few seconds and every play-by-play person’s worst nightmare when he stepped to the plate with no identifiable number on his jersey. D’Backs play-by-play man Steve Berthiaume was bemused over the situation before analyst Bob Brenly somehow stepped in with the answer.
“I’d like to tell you who’s coming up next… but he doesn’t have a number. Somebody’s on deck!”
At least Cave wasn’t in the stands taking a selfie, which might have caused another international incident with the D’Backs booth.
