cleveland weatherman

For a minute there, it looked like Cleveland weatherman Scott Sabol might never be allowed to shave.

Sabol had vowed at the beginning of the season not to shear his beard until the Browns won a game, and he was getting pretty scruffy as Cleveland went deeper into the winter without a victory. Entering this weekend, the Browns had only two more chances to save Sabol from being bearded until next fall… at least.

But, miracle of miracles, Cleveland won Saturday against the Chargers, meaning Sabol finally got to whip out his razor Monday. It had been 109 days since he last shaved.

Sabol’s co-workers at Fox 8 tweeted more or less a play-by-play of Sabol’s shearing,

Look at that, he cleans up pretty nice.

Sabol wrote a blog post recapping his bearded odyssey, in which he revealed that he never expected the beard to last this long and that he planned to shave if the Browns ended the season 0-16. The longtime Browns fan seems a little worried that his stunt could be interpreted as making light of his team’s woefulness. Here’s an excerpt from the blog post:

Most people understood the intention was not a serious one even as the “0-for” beard evolved. I’ve always been a Browns fan since I was a kid. I remember the glory days of the 1980s.  I remember the day the Browns left in 1995. I remember walking into old Cleveland Stadium to buy a seat in 1996. My basement is decorated in Cleveland sports memorabilia spanning 30 plus years.  This season was as tough for me as it was for all of Cleveland. I can’t imagine how tough this has been on the Browns organization.

So I want to thank everyone who has followed this since September 8th.  Its December 25th. I just finished applying some Beard Oil to my 106 day old growth knowing that the end of the beard is at hand. My family is rejoicing. It’s truly been an exciting ride.

Maybe next year Sabol is better off growing a beard until the Indians or Cavs win a game. It might not get as itchy.
