Ohio State and Michigan engaged in a pair of exciting hockey games, one of which ended in some rare college hockey fisticuffs. Friday’s game didn’t go that route, but was a great game as Ohio State’s last second goal and a scoreless overtime forced an exciting shootout. That’s when things got sketchy as the announcing crew somehow lost track of the shootout score.
As you’ll see below, Dan Dickerson calls Michigan’s third penalty shot as if it’s tied 1-1 and the shot is for the lead when in fact this penalty shot was for the win. Uncorrected by his partner, Manny Legace, Dickerson then extends the flub to claiming victory for the Buckeyes as they tally their first goal (Dickerson thinking it’s the clinching second goal) in the shootout when in reality it just extended the shootout to a fourth round.
Mistakes happen every-game, but it’s rare you really see one like this at a pivotal moment and extends for such a long period of time to the point where an erroneous victory call is made. The shootout would extend another six more rounds before the Buckeyes eventually won so at least it wasn’t a total Dewey beats Truman announcing call.
