Yankees radio voice John Sterling was among 500 people who lost their homes in a massive fire at an apartment complex in Edgewood, NJ. The fire began about 4 p.m. Wednesday local time and quickly spread throughout the complex spewing flames that could be seen across the Hudson River into New York City.
Sterling, who has been the Voice of the Yankees on radio dating back to 1989, told the New York Post, “I think my apartment is gone. I won’t have anything left.”
He tried to look at the loss with a sense of humor:
“I have to laugh,” he said. “Because I always hear I have too many ties — I must have had 82,000 ties. Now I have none!”

Luckily everyone got out alive and another 500 people living nearby were displaced by the blaze. Over half of the 408 apartment units were destroyed. The fire is under investigation.
As for Sterling, he said he’s thankful the fire occurred in the afternoon when everyone was awake and not in the early morning hours as he told the Post, “I’m a sound sleeper. I’d be dead.”
It’s fortunate that everyone in the complex survived and just a handful of people suffered minor injuries.
