LOS ANGELES, CA – AUGUST 30: Dodger broadcaster Vin Scully smiles before throwing out the first pitch during ceeremonies honoring him on his 64 years of sevice before the game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Los Angeles Dodgers on August 30, 2012 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California. Vin Scully’s voice is arguably the most iconic in sports today. Scully’s broadcasting style is a throwback, and one that many announcers today couldn’t even begin to replicate. But we may not be hearing his voice during Dodgers games next season – Scully is still undecided on whether or not he’ll return to the booth for a 67th season.

From the LA Times

Scully is 87. This is the time of year when the Hall of Fame broadcaster traditionally announces whether he will return for the following season, and his cold prompted a flurry of inquiries from concerned readers, wondering what Scully has decided about next season.

He told us he has not made a decision about returning for what would be his 67th season with the Dodgers. He said he does not want to commit too soon.

Last year, Scully’s return announcement came at the end of July. He’s said that his health is fine (with the exception of a cold last week that resulted in his broadcast not being simulcast on the radio for the first three innings), and he still needs to talk to his wife and the Dodgers for their thoughts on his return.

I can’t see any way the Dodgers would push Scully out the door unless the quality of his broadcasts deteriorates too far – and this season, they’ve been as sharp as ever. Unless Scully’s health takes a dramatic turn for the worse or his wife isn’t keen on him returning to the booth next year, I’d imagine he’d be back for 2016.

There’s one caveat to this – if the Dodgers end up winning the World Series, that would be the perfect moment for Scully to go out on. He would add one final legendary call to add to his ledger before riding into the sunset.
