The Subway Series took place over the weekend with the Mets and Yankees squaring off for an early-season battle of New York.  The Mets have been riding high so far this year, surprisingly off to the best start in Major League Baseball at 14-5.  The Yankees took 2 of 3 in the series to move into a first place tie at 11-8 in the AL East.

It’s been a while since things were really heated between the two Big Apple squads, but there was this weird exchange on Twitter during last night’s game.  The Yankees seemingly took offense to the Mets referring to the team as New York (AL) for some reason.

Sick burn, Mets social media department!

Look, the Yankees are the AL representative for the city.  They do play in New York.  I’m not sure what the problem here is.  The Mets made multiple references to the Yankees by name during the series so it’s not like this is an Ohio State-Michigan “that team up north” thing where the Mets can never refer to the Yankees by name because of some ancient code of honor.

It is smart when you think about it though… instead of threatening injury by playing an obnoxious game of beanball and getting multiple guys suspended by being insufferable jerks (looking at you, Royals), air out your grievances in social media.  There’s got to be some advanced analytics that justify this.
