We take things for granted watching as much sports as we do but the reality is, we’re quite spoiled. Pylon cams are here, drones are coming, but let’s not forget about the good ole spydercam.
In last night’s game, the production van opted to show kickoff return live via the spydercam (something you rarely see if at all). What unfolded was some amazing footage of the touchdown that to the untrained eye was probably missed.
Beyond the initial decision to use the spydercam as a live view, we have the camera operator starting from behind the kickoff (so not to get in the way of the flight of the ball). The camera then zips down to the 20 yard-line before tracking the returner who passes the camera around the 30 yard-line. Spydercam then follows the returner at a pretty damn close proximity the next seventy yards before showing the celebration not far away in the endzone.
All in all, this expensive piece of equipment covers more than 130+ yards while keeping the returner tightly in the shot the entire time. You couldn’t even do something this cool in a Madden replay. Well done nameless camera operators and production people.
