5) Do *something* with weekday mornings
Man, talk about a wasteland. Tuesday morning on Fox Sports 1 we’re getting last night’s episode of Fox Sports Live, last night’s episode of Countdown, poker, a Bundesliga match from the weekend, and finally, Champions League coverage in the afternoon. On Wednesday, the poker is replaced with a CONCACAF Champions League match from Tuesday night and the Champions League coverage starts earlier. On Thursday, FS1 is airing Red Bull Cliff Diving at 10 AM before the Champions League draw. On Friday, we’re getting a UFC Tonight rerun from Wednesday night, an hour of evergreen UFC coverage, and yes, another hour of poker.
On ESPN and its family of networks, live episodes of SportsCenter, First Take, and Mike & Mike have become staples – for better or worse. If something happened overnight or early in the morning, ESPN can jump on it. Fox cannot. The same is even true for MLB Network, which rolled out the live, three hour MLB Central this season every weekday morning to lead into a full day of live coverage during the season. Hell, even NBCSN has the Dan Patrick Show live in the mornings!
Fox has reruns of live events and studio shows, and while the addition of Colin Cowherd’s show will give the network *some* live coverage before soccer, or NASCAR, or golf, the mornings are still not appointment viewing. It wouldn’t take much to fill a couple hours with *something* we haven’t seen before, right? The less Fox Sports 1 is on the air live, the less it becomes a destination network for sports fans.
