As he approaches life as a senior citizen, Bob Costas has been getting crankier. Some of his “Get off my lawn” commentaries during the Sunday Night Football a couple of years ago were head-scratching opinions while others did hit the nail on the head.

This week, Costas appeared on the Dan Patrick Show and the topic of Caitlyn Jenner came up, notably the recent announcement that she will receive the Arthur Ashe Award for courage at the ESPY’s next month. It’s at that point where Bob chose his words carefully, but still managed the blast the choice of Jenner as a “crass exploitation play” to get ratings:

Now, some of you will agree with Bob, and we’ve gone over the choice of Jenner for the award. Whether you believe the award is a publicity stunt or the right touch is up to you.

However, one thing is for sure. No matter how careful Costas is in choosing his words, he always finds a way to be cutting and caustic. He can try to be diplomatic, but Bob will always let you know where he stands. Now whether you like it or not is another thing.

Bob probably won’t be watching the ESPY’s when it airs on ABC later this summer.
