Yankees play by play commentator and ESPN New York radio host Michael Kay has been tough on Alex Rodriguez. Kay didn’t think there was any chance Rodriguez would ever appear on his show (especially after the surreal A-Rod/Mike Francesa interview from two years ago), and made a bet with his cohost Don La Greca.

If Rodriguez appeared on the show as a guest, Kay would pay a month of La Greca’s mortgage. Following the Blue Jays-Yankees rainout on Thursday night, Le Greca got to work trying to get A-Rod to appear on the show. The details from Newsday

La Greca made several pleas on the air to have Rodriguez visit Thursday night, and eventually left the studio in search of Rodriguez. But he was stopped at the clubhouse door because the media access period following the rainout announcement had ended.

It turned out Rodriguez already had left the building, but after one more request from Kay, he called in from his car, saying he was doing it to help La Greca with his mortgage and in celebration of the recent success of La Greca’s favorite team, the Mets.

Kay, La Greca and Ryan Ruocco briefly interviewed A-Rod about his season and about the Thursday night NFL opener, and that was that. Kay said he would pay the mortgage offer even though the guest appearance was not in person.

And here’s audio of the interview via ESPN, which was short, inoffensive, and cordial.

What a world – Alex Rodriguez is still a dirty cheater, but he’s playing ball with the local media and coming off as likeable.
